A Beginner-Friendly Drone with Excellent Image Quality: The DJI Mini 4 Pro
A Beginner-Friendly Drone with Excellent
Image Quality: The DJI Mini 4 Pro
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is a fully functional drone in a remarkably small, practical, and highly useful package.
One of the most adored mini, or compact, drones on the market is the DJI Mini 3 Pro, which was released in May 2022. It is praised for its portability, video quality, and light weight. With the Mini 4 Pro, DJI is back with promises of better flight time, camera quality, and beginner-friendly features like Intelligent Flight Modes.
The Mini 4 Pro's affordable price point makes it an accessible purchase, according to DJI, who claims it's their best drone for new users. But can the biggest brand in the sector actually produce a small, user-friendly drone for beginners that outperform its highly regarded predecessor and lives up to its Pro moniker?
Features and Design: Size Matters
A drone like the DJI Mini 4 Pro would be perfect for attacking me. I've experimented with both inexpensive and expensive drones, such as the HEQ Swan Voyager with FPV Goggles, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. For instance, the Swan Voyager's size and complicated setup have prevented me from using it more frequently. The simple, more affordable drones are almost overly simplistic. They have a limited range and can't avoid obstacles on their own, among other drawbacks. They are also advantageously inexpensive because they are simple to misplace
.
That is why products like the DJI Mini 4 Pro are so alluring. Although it comes in a small package that can actually be transported almost anywhere, it doesn't skimp on professional features like full 4K 60fps video quality, Active Track 360 degrees, for trouble-free recording regardless of how the drone is oriented, and unidirectional obstacle sensing. Size and weight are impressive features of the DJI Mini 4 Pro. It is roughly 5.86 inches long and 3.66 inches wide when its propellers are folded. It only weighs 303.5 grams with the extended battery. Of course, drones with a takeoff weight of 250g or more must be registered with the FAA and in some states.
Although it's a straightforward procedure, it's important to remember when using the extended battery as opposed to the standard battery, which has a shorter flight time but keeps the drone under the 250g limit responsive 1080p/60FPS live video feed is available at a distance of up to 20km (12 miles) using DJI's Cousin 4 (O4) video transmission technology. Although the signal strength and range can be significantly impacted by environmental factors, it is still impressive for this class of drone and an improvement over the roughly 12 km (7 mi) maximum range of its predecessor. Starting at $759 (DJI RC-N2), which includes the drone, the RC-N2 remote controller (without a display), and one battery with a 34-minute flight time, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is offered in a variety of configurations. The DJI RC 2 ($959), which replaces the RC-N2 with the screen-based RC 2 remote controller, is the next step up. It has the same type of indicator lights and power button as the charging station. The RC 2 remote controller charges, functions exactly the same, and has a battery life of up to three hours
. Setting Up: Simple for Novices
Fortunately, not much is required to get going. Removing the propeller holder and gimbals protector from the drone is a simple process once the RC 2 remote and at least one battery are fully charged. After that, spread out the propeller blades, front and back arms. Remove the control sticks from RC 2's storage slots and screw them into the controller after the drone has been prepared. Finally, extend the antennas on the controller.
Prior to initial use, the RC 2 must be activated via an active Wi-Fi connection. The guided activation process on the 5.5-inch touch screen is started by pressing, then pressing and holding the power button
.Except for any firmware updates, you are ready to fly once the drone is powered on and the controller is connected to it. I was prepared to go from box to first flight in about 30 minutes after making sure everything was charged.
An unidirectional vision system that can detect obstacles above and below is located on the front of the drone, along with the gimbals and camera. The downward vision, 3D infrared sensing, and auxiliary light systems are located below. The Power button, USB-C port, micros card slot, battery buckles, and battery level LEDs are located toward the back of the drone. Aircraft status indicators are located just below the outside of the rear propellers. Above the touch screen on the front of the device, the RC 2 remote control has two control sticks. The touch screen display's 1920 x 1280 pixel resolution is vivid, responsive, and bright, and it has good visibility even in direct sunlight. The Flight Pause/Return to Home (RTH) button, Flight Mode switch (CineSmooth, Normal, and Sport), and the Power button are located between the control sticks. The battery level LED and status LED are located above the flight mode switch.
The antennas are located at the top of the remote, and it also has speakers in the middle, two buttons for taking pictures and recording video on either side, and a button for recording video. Both a Gimbals dial and a Camera Control dial are located below those two buttons. The Gimbals dial controls the camera's tilt. While C2 switches between Landscape and Portrait modes.
Similar to the drone, I thought the RC 2 had a sturdy, ergonomic, and well-thought-out design. Although the likelihood of a crash landing is low, I never worried that the drone or the RC 2 wouldn't withstand the odd mishap or drop.DJI recommends the following three apps: DJI Fly, DJI Store, and Light Cut, which are compatible with ions 11.0 or later and Android 7.0 or later.
With DJI Fly, which is pre-installed on the RC 2, you can edit videos, access the Sky Pixel social media platform for sharing images and videos, and access a tutorial and other educational resources. It's beneficial to have access to some of the app's features, like the learning courses, on your phone or tablet even if you have the RC 2.
The DJI Store offers online shopping, a forum, customer service, tutorials, and—possibly most helpfully—a Virtual Flight experience for training safely with a virtual DJI Mini 4 Pro. It's an excellent method for both "try-before-you-buy" The Company advises Light Cut as the best video editing app, despite not being made by DJI. Compared to DJI Fly, it offers more sophisticated editing features, such as AI-based ones Performance in Flight: Simple Does It
In the chilly fall weather of New Jersey, I tested the DJI Mini 4 Pro and experienced no stability problems in both sunny and cloudy conditions with light winds. It goes without saying that you shouldn't fly in the rain, snow, or fog, and wind speeds must be below 23 mph, but in the majority of normal circumstances, the lightweight drone only shows slight vibrations. When flying beyond the drone's range, the fact that flight limits on height and distance are enabled by default offers a great deal of peace of mind. The Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) System, when activated, provides real-time updates on flight safety and airspace restriction updates, preventing the drone from flying in restricted airspace. Again, all wonderful features that make using a drone safe for even the inexperienced user.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro will automatically take off and hover four feet off the ground while waiting for commands in basic flight. The drone is controlled by the two flight sticks, and depending on user preference, there are three different modes of operation. I had no trouble controlling the drone and camera even without first using the flight simulator The DJI Mini 4 Pro has a smart flight mode called Focus Track. Focus Track is made up of the components Spotlight, Point of Interest (POI), and Active Track.
You can still fly manually with Spotlight, but the camera is fixed on the subject of your interest. In accordance with the specified radius and the drone's maximum flight speed of 26 mph, POI instructs the drone to circle around its intended target. The drone must keep a set distance and altitude from the tracked subject while using Active Track’s Trace or Parallel modes. While Trace mode offers eight different types of tracking directions and follows the subject's movements, Parallel tracks from a geographical orientation in relation to the subject. Whenever you shoot in any of locating and stabilizing itself using a sensing system. Normal, which is suggested for the majority of use cases, was the mode I relied on the most to reduce the majority of uncertainty and stress from my flight plan.
Obstacle sensing is disabled while the drone's responses are tuned for agility and speed in Sport Mode. Positioning in Sport Mode is accomplished by GNSS and the downward vision system. I only used this mode in open fields because of the risk of hitting trees or other obstacles, but it's a nice feature to have for those who are more daring and want to fly the drone in an acrobatic manner.
Normal Mode serves as the foundation for Cine, which has a slower flight speed to improve stability. mode was more stable for cases for the photos and videos leaning on the most.
Is The DJI Mini 4 Pro A Good Buying?
Even though the price is reasonable, there are still unbranded drones that offer many of the same features for a much lower price. The Mini 4 Pro must therefore give top priority to build quality, setup simplicity, intuitive control, image quality, and support. In that sense, DJI has been successful
.
DJI has developed what may be the first such product that is truly ready for the mainstream, less than ten years after the first consumer-ready drones hit the market. No matter your level of expertise, the DJI Mini 4 Pro does pretty much everything you could ask for in a drone in a remarkably small, practical, and highly functional package.
